Polyurethane is a high-strength polymer material that is resistant to oil, gasoline, acids, and alkalis. Polyurethane is a good dielectric, has high resistance to cuts and abrasion (hundreds of times greater than that of rubber), impact, is durable in service, and is easily machinable (turning, milling, etc.). A distinctive feature of polyurethanes is their exceptionally high physical and mechanical properties, which in some respects surpass not only all types of rubber and elastomers but also metals.
Polyurethane imparts useful properties to products that are unattainable for conventional rubbers. These include unmatched wear resistance, abrasion resistance, and increased hardness (while maintaining high elasticity over a wide temperature range), which allows polyurethane to be used in products subjected to particularly high mechanical loads, such as cold rolling or steel bending shafts.
The most important properties of polyurethane:
– elasticity (relative elongation at break is twice that of rubber);
– low abrasion (conditional wear resistance is three times higher than that of rubber);
– high strength (exceeds the strength of rubber by 22.5 times);
– high resistance to tearing and repeated deformation;
– ability to operate at high pressure (up to 105 MPa);
– acid resistance and resistance to many solvents;
– increased hardness (from 40 to 98 Shore units);
– temperature range from -60°C to +120°C;
– resistance to microorganisms and mold;
– vibration resistance and resistance to oil and gasoline;
– elasticity at low temperatures;
– high dielectric properties;
– ozone resistance.
