A polyurethane silent block, also known as rubber-metal bushing, is a machine or mechanical component that belongs to the category of vibration isolators and is used to isolate vibration and absorb shock loads.

A silent block is a type of rubber-metal joint. It consists of two steel bushings with an insert between them made of either rubber or polyurethane. Silent blocks are used to connect suspension components. The elastic insert between the steel bushings absorbs vibrations transmitted from road irregularities to suspension assemblies during vehicle operation. These joints are subjected to some of the highest loads, as they must withstand the deformation experienced by a vehicle’s suspension.

Types of silent blocks:

  • front silent blocks, used for mounting control arms, stabilizer bars, and radius rods
  • rear silent blocks, required for the installation of rods in the rear suspension system

During vehicle operation, silent blocks are exposed to substantial loads, making regular inspections and timely replacement essential. Their condition should be checked every 50,000 kilometers. To inspect suspension bushings, raise the front and rear of the vehicle separately, check the suspension arms for excessive play, and visually examine each silent block. Pay close attention to the insert. Any cracks or separation indicate that replacement is required.
